Prerequisites:

General Responsibilities:
The lifeguard's responsibilities include ensuring the safety of all people in the pool area by eliminating/reducing hazards and hazardous behavior. The lifeguard is to observe and listen to patrons in and around the pool area and rescue and/or provide immediate care to all. The lifeguard is to provide excellent customer service so that the person he/she serves will want to come back again.
Specific Responsibilities:
Areas of responsibility include the following headings:
Skill Development and Progression:
1. The lifeguard must maintain appropriate physical fitness.
Staff Training:
1. The lifeguard must successfully complete the 30-hour Ellis Lifeguard Course.
2. The lifeguard must maintain his/her Ellis certification by participating in at least 4 hours of
in-service monthly.
3. The lifeguard must attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
Supervision:
1. The lifeguard must enforce the pool rules.
2. The lifeguard must supervise the whirlpool, sauna, and steam room in addition to the pool area.
3. The lifeguard must maintain the cleanliness of the pool area and the equipment associated with the pool.
Program Development:
1. The lifeguard must support the YMCA and its programs and provide general customer service.
2. The lifeguard must complete all paperwork and record keeping (i.e. accident, attendance, and substitution reports).
3. The lifeguard must perform maintenance duties and complete cleaning log.
4. The lifeguard must take complete responsibility for all scheduled shifts and follow appropriate substitution procedures.
Effect on End Results:
The end result is that the lifeguard is knowledgeable and capable of ensuring the safety of all in the pool area and takes action to prevent injuries. The lifeguard is a representative of the YMCA and should take care that his/her area is presentable.
